Hi all,

I've just bought a storm sail and was wondering whether it has an RYA PY handicap? It seems like such a reduction on size of sail that it should have a different number, but I can't find one anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions on what number to use if there is no 'set' PY number?

I'm probably wrong but I thought the idea was you sailed off the same handicap - i.e if its howling and you use the Storm or Fun sail you are slower but you stay up longer and swim less - levelling things out.  (I find one of my shot RS200 kites helps in a blow too!)

All very correct but if you are a lightweight and you sail with a full sail in the moderate winds you are often overpowered and so your full sail colleagues stay up longer and swim less - which does not level things out . Were there to be any other modifications to the Vareo for a Storm sail used all the time then there would probably be another PY number for that rig .

The Laser Radial which has a smaller sail than the normal Laser does have its own number , but it also has a shortened mast .

Unfortunately that 20% reduction in the Storm sail area when used all the time by lightweight sailors has to be made up for by technique , ability and youth !
